Title Sequence of 1408

In one of our media lessons we analysed how producers made their title sequence intersting and eye catching. These were the results of our analysis on the film 1408, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura:

Seconds/minutes

14
Black screen- ‘Dimension Films Presents’.

29
Rain pouring down on road. Dark, night time, pathetic fallacy. Weather sets tone, extreme long shot.

35
Panning shot, then ‘Samuel L. Jackson’.

44
‘1408’ appears whilst music starts to play and car lights become brighter. There is a glow around the title and the car, and the title also has a smudge affect, as if the rain has made it run.

47
Camera tracks the car reversing, shows he has missed a turning.

56
Point of view shot of house, shining torch.

1:00
He is lost after missing his turning.

1:15
Pulling up to the house, car lights shining on it.

1:17
Shot of back of car.

1:24
Torrential rain on bridge, trees surrounding.

1:28
Man walking across bridge in the rain.

1:31
Shot of the house- characters names still appearing.

1:37
Scene moves to him walking into hotel. The mise-en-scene changes to a much brighter setting with artificial high key lights.

1:46
Dialogue begins, him and the hotel owner. The hotel owner seems happy that he has come, as if he has called him out, and needs him for something.
1:50
Now a shot reverse shot of him and the couple that owns the hotel, they say to him ‘you probably want to know about the ghosts’.
